--avoiding cliched Georgia song reference--

For those who were concerned, I'm now safe and warm in Georgia.

Here's the story:

We started at about 11:30 Friday night, and saw the sun rise over the mountains in the low desert (I think) between Phoenix and Tuscon Saturday morning. We made it to Don (travel companion Nolan's grandfather/Tribe worship facilitator Dave's father) and Doris's house in Midland, TX at about 7:30 (local time) that night - in 18 hours! (I'm told that's a new McSparran family record.) Don and Doris were wonderful and generous hosts to us Saturday night giving us a delicious meal and much-needed rest, and we got going at about 8:30 local time the next morning. We finally got out of Texas at about 5:00pm, going through two monster thunderstorms and seeing the aftermath of a really ugly, sad accident on our way out. After cruising through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama (and after eating some not-so-great Chinese food) we finally arrived in Athens, GA at about 5:00am. Nolan and Maggie dropped Simon, me, and all my stuff off at Bethany's place (where I'll be crashing on the couch for at least the next couple of weeks as I look for a sublet), had a cup of coffee courtesy of Bethany, and drove up to Blairsville to stay at Jacqueline (Nolan's sister) and Doug's.

Simon did really well the whole way (after some adventures with the sedative the first day), and is now resting comfortably on a pillow in front of the window watching the local wildlife scurry about. He was particularly fascinated by a tiny lizard this morning. He's not used to seeing too much wildlife on St. Andrews Place, so all the birds and lizards and critters about here are captivating to him (even as you and I know he's never going to get outside to hunt them).

G-E-O-R-G-I-A

I leave for Georgia tomorrow night at midnight. 48 hours in a Honda Civic with two good friends and a (hopefully) sedated cat, driving across the country. I'm going to see five states I've never been to - New Mexico, Texas, Arkansas, Alabama, and Mississippi, a state whose name I've known how to spell for most of my life because it was one of those things you just learn as a kid. And I'm finally going to have a chance to use that knowledge. I'm just going to walk up to some random guy at a gas station in Jackson, say "M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I!", turn around, and walk away, knowing that the circle is now complete.

The weird thing is that people here don't seem to understand that I'm just going to be gone three months. As often as I tell people "I'm going to be back in January!" they still seem to keep acting as if I'm leaving LA forever. It's uncanny. I mean, it's nice to have people here who care about me and who don't want me to leave - I've lived in situations before where that wasn't the case - but I'm almost tempted to get a T-shirt made that says "SERIOUSLY, THREE MONTHS, PEOPLE." That T-shirt would be completely useless after tomorrow, though, so it's a little late now.

But my room has never been cleaner. At the moment, all my non-furniture worldly possessions are either in a big plastic bin and suitcase (which travel with me tomorrow to GA) or in big plastic bins in my closet, where they will live for the next three months as Tribey-friend Bec takes over my room. It's weird thinking about how I'm not going to see those things for a few months, and to be honest the only thing I'm really anticipating missing will be my larger computer (which I'd meant to do some work on). My cat, of course, will miss his perch as well... but hopefully not too much. He's very disoriented right now, what with most of the things he's used to sitting or laying on gone. I hope he does okay with this temporary move.

Decompression

I knew I was still decompressing from Burning Man when I saw three shopping carts overturned on a freeway median and thought "that's some interesting art."

Just got back four hours ago. I'm now at work. I may write more later; I may not.
