Providence

...so remember back in January when I talked about having to restart my MA thesis from scratch because the hard drive with all the footage on it decided it was time to die?

The other day, I was in the middle of cleaning my room - which for me is a weeks-long process consisting of my looking at each of my possessions and asking "do I really need this?" - and I came across that old hard drive. The hard-drive-shaped wound is healed now that my real thesis is finished, so with no bitterness in my heart I plugged in the old hard drive, intending to see if I could build a primary partition on it and format it or if the hardware itself was hosed. (That's nerd-speak for "I wanted to see if I could still get some use out of it.")

This is what I saw.

Somehow this hard drive was resurrected, perhaps by the hand of God. Everything that was on it before, was still on it. And that got me thinking about providence. (Oh good, here comes the telegraphed "let's talk about God" turn.)

The film would have been a good thesis. Not a great one, but a good one. But the thesis paper I actually wrote was better than good - it has the potential to define my academic career from here on out. I'm not counting any chickens, but I've had several people talk to me about publishing it as either a book or a chapter in a book (or both). Even already it's been valuable, allowing me to prove to myself that I do have 93 (and more!) pages' worth of things to say about a given topic.

That, and it's given me an excuse to skip class/work/whatever to go to Burning Man for the rest of my life, because it's research now and not just play.

So really, much as it sucked at the time (and I spent a good 20 minutes in obscenity-ville when the drive died), it was something akin to providence that the old thing stopped working. If it had worked, I would have continued on that path, and had a DVD I could show people and not much else, since I have no plans for a career as a filmmaker. But now I've got a thesis I'm really proud of, and that could do a lot for my career as a professional nerd.

The Lord moves in mysterious ways.

I'm in Athens.

No Parthenon, but a university.

Georgia is hot and humid. Thank God there are so very few buildings in Georgia that don't have air conditioning. I can deal with heat (I live in LA, for goodness' sake) but sticky weather drives me up the wall.

I'm going to check out a few leads on jobs next week... I reupholstered my resume so it looks all nice and purty, and bought special Heavy Paper at Target so I could print it out. So, uh, wish me luck... unless, of course, you want me to stay in LA, in which case you shouldn't wish me luck.

Fixed.

Colors are fixed. Gap is gone. Life is good.

My suitcase is supposed to be delivered here sometime this afternoon, in theory.

Cosmetic Changes.

In case you didn't notice, a few things are different around here. I've added the blogroll to your right (I may tweak it a little so it doesn't look so busy), gotten rid of those inline frames, and "blog-ified" the creative page. There are still a few things to fix - mostly that unexplainable 5-px gap between the javascript image generator and the three-column table that represents the content, and the fact that I can't seem to get a display color to sync up to the menu colors - but for the most part, it's all done. Aren't long plane rides grand?

I'm in Georgia for a couple of weeks visiting the ladyfriend. I'd say the updates would be more sporadic, but honestly they couldn't get much more sporadic than they already are. Trip update: Delta found a way to completely lose my suitcase this time. Hats off to them. Hopefully they'll deliver it here tomorrow...
