Bored at work...
I forgot my debit card, driver's license, and Fuller ID at home... so I can't eat dinner, can't buy books, and can't check out some things I need from the library. All of those things are good things to do, and I can't do any of them because I lack three pieces of plastic. Alas for modern life.
Things are boring around here. St. Patrick's Day was good... some friends and I went out for drinks at a loud and somewhat obnoxious place, and a tipsy woman who really wasn't my type told me she really liked my butt. I drank Guinness from a can, but didn't get a chance to try out my brogue since there was really only one woman there I was attracted to, and a fellow-traveler who kindly donated his booth to us was hitting on her, and rather clumsily so. Oh well. It was too loud in there for the brogue to work anyway. I'll just have to go to Bergin's and hope someone cute shows up.
I went to a conference on Saturday about world hunger, poverty, and AIDS, and it was really good. It wasn't really all that educational for me, since I'm already pretty well aware of what's going on, but it was nice to meet people who are working to make things better, and nice to make connections that could be useful later on.
That's really about all... a new quarter's started, work on the thesis continues (I've got a hard start-writing date of April 10, and a self-imposed due date of May 1), things go on. Nothing is new under the sun. Have a nice day.

It's St. Patrick's Day.
Top o' the... uh, afternoon to yeh!
This is the one day of the year where I make a sacred vow not to even approach an Irish pub, despite the fact that it's the one day a year on which my brogue is most likely to get chicks. My two favorite Irish pubs are both guaranteed to be packed to the brim - I'm told the line at Bergin's is all the way down the block, and it's mid-afternoon and rainy to boot. I'm thinking I can even go to a "non-Irish" place and use the brogue just fine, thankyeverymuch.
It's also the one day during Lent when I, in solidarity with the Irish people, am allowed to eat meat. In case you weren't aware of this little factoid, the Irish people got a special dispensation from the Pope himself to eat meat on St. Patricks Day, and that was back when Lent meant no meat at all for Catholics rather than that namby-pamby "meatless Friday during Lent" crap.* So today I made a traditional Irish breakfast of bacon, potatoes, onions, and eggs wrapped in a flour tortilla**, and yeh, it was good.
So happy St. Patrck's Day to you all.
"Go bhfana í ngrá linn, iad siúd atá í ngrá linn. Iad siúd nach bhfuil, go gcasa Dia a gcroíthe. Agus muna gcasann Sé a gcroíthe go gcasa Sé caol na coise acu go n-aithneoimid iad as a mbacadaíl."***
* I'm more hardcore than the Catholic Church. I rule.
** Contents not guaranteed to be Irish, or even Irish-related. But bacon is the traditional St. Patrick's Day food. The Irish were introduced to corned beef by the Jews in America when the Irish immigrants were too poor to afford bacon.
*** The Gaelic version of the Irish blessing: "May those who love us, love us. And those who do not love us, may God turn their hearts. And if He doesn't turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles, so we'll know them by their limping."

I have been greatly inspired recently...
...by my desktop image, which is a picture of Johnny Cash flipping off the camera. In case you couldn't tell from the description, it's not a family-friendly image, so I'm not going to post it here... but if you google image search "johnny cash flip off" you'll be able to see it. It's really a wonderful image.
Thanks for letting me share. Not as if you had a choice... this is my blog.

It's the ides of March...
...so, uh, beware.
Yeah.
I turned in Part I (actually Part III) of my Thesis Project today... it was an assignment for another class that eventually will be developed into part of the Total Package(tm). There's still a lot of work to do on it - there's a big distance between "class project" good and "Masters thesis and possible conference piece" good, as well as a big difference between "all the interviews I could get done before the end of the quarter" and "all the interviews I want to do" - but overall I'm somewhere near satisfied with it. It's an ethnographic case study of patterns of engagement between Tribe and the Burning Man community... which in layman's terms means I interviewed a bunch of people from Tribe and Burning Man about their experiences. I didn't get all the interviews I wanted to get done, so that's part of the next step.
I've been noticing some interesting things as I've gone through this study... and one of them is that even on a non-academic level there's a great deal of synchronicity between the values of the emerging church (if there is such a thing) and the Burning Man movement. In many ways I already knew there was - I'm writing a thesis about it, for goodness' sake - but the degree to which the two synch up is incredible. I'm fairly excited about this project and how it's going to turn up.
I've also become more and more excited and impatient to go back to the playa - a feeling which wasn't helped any by the Mutaytor show I went to on Friday night, which was (predictably) nothing short of incredible. I did realize, however, how much work I still have left to do before going back out - I have to figure out a wardrobe, have to decide on a project (I've got 3-4 floating around in my head right now, all with varying degrees of difficulty/expense), and have to start talking with Tribe people about the return of Playa Con Dios. In short, it's six months away and I haven't done a thing to plan, and I really should.
That is all.

Kirby Puckett
Kirby Puckett expected to be taken off life support
When my family and I lived in Minnesota in the mid-80's, I was a huge Twins fan... and a huge Kirby Puckett fan. I don't think we ever actually made it to a game at the Metrodome (my parents will undoubtedly now remember that we did) but I remember having his baseball card, and watching him on TV. He was a heckuva ballplayer, whose career was cut short by glaucoma.
Now it looks like he's about to pass on, due to a stroke, at 44. His life support is going to be pulled tonight, according to the news. It sucks whenever anyone dies at such a young age, but a Hall of Fame ballplayer and one of my childhood sports heroes dying at a young age also sucks quite a bit.
Pray for him and his family... that he miraculously recover, or that his passing be easy and painless and that his family be comforted.

Late-night ramblings on a Saturday night...
I'm drinking Orange Blossom White Tea from the Republic. It's delicious. I had four bottles of Guinness earlier, as I sat at home with my roommates watching Christopher Guest mockumentaries.
I actually did work on my thesis today, which was a marvel since it was a Saturday and I'm usually terrible about getting things done on Saturdays. I think the key is getting out of the apartment and going somewhere else to work. I have fewer distractions elsewhere.
I really have nothing interesting to say at this point. I sincerely apologize. Here's another picture of Simon as atonement.
