Groovy license plate.

For those who can't read it, it says "ZXCVBNM". I saw it as I was driving down Wilshire out to Santa Monica last night.

If the significance of that license number doesn't hit you right away, try typing it out.

I got mugged last night.

I was talking on the phone with someone at about 1:30am and wandering aimlessly around my neighborhood (I know, bad idea) and two guys jumped me, knocked me down, punched me in the head, and took my wallet. I'm ok - a bit shaken, obviously, and I've got a cut on my ear and a big bruise on the side of my head, but all told I came out lucky considering what could have happened. And my wallet's gone, which means I have to go to all the trouble of getting all my various cards and things cancelled and reissued.

The real damage, I think, is psychological - there's nothing like getting attacked out of nowhere to shake one up a bit. And it didn't just feel like robbery... there was a rage there, a hate, that reminded me of getting beaten up in junior high. This seemed personal... maybe this is me projecting, but it seemed less like they were after my wallet and more like they were out to make me feel powerless and impotent.

All in all, though, like I said, I think I'm lucky... they really had me down for the count there, and could have done a lot worse to me instead of just running off with my wallet. I come away from the experience with nothing but a bruised head and a few missing possessions, and some psychological damage to undo. All told, there are worse ways to walk away from - or not walk away from - a mugging.

Have you noticed...

...that 95% of the time people say "literally," they don't actually mean it?

I was talking to someone today about this project I'm working on outlining connections between Burning Man and the emerging church (I'm a theology nerd, I know) and how it would be one of the first academic works from the field of theology on the subject, and I told her that "this could literally put me on the map."

I caught myself there. What I was thinking was that I could present it at conferences, publish in a journal, work with other eggheads, etc. - you know, get on the figurative map of the academic study of emerging ecclesiology. But to "literally" be put on the map would mean that there would be, on the map of California, the words "James Gilmore" somewhere in the middle of Los Angeles.

Much as I'm not opposed to such a thing, and will in fact demand such a thing when I achieve my lifelong goal of world domination, that wasn't what I was talking about today at all.

The fact that I'm sharing this with you this afternoon is indication of just how bored I am...

At least it's creative vandalism...

Reflections on New Urbanism a little later, unless I get distracted, which is somewhat likely.

Korean Candy Labels

My roommate picked these up the other day from the local Korean market...

"The gorgeous taste of fully ripened pineapple, imposing as a southern island king crowned in glory, is yours to enjoy in every soft and juicy Kasugai Pineapple Gummy."

"Every drop of fresh apple juice, carefully pressed from the reddest apples, shining in colors of the cheeks of a snow-country child, is yours to enjoy in each soft and juicy Kasugai Apple Gummy."

Honda = Dependable.

On Saturday, while I was gone in Phoenix, my roommate was driving my car and noticed that the "Check Engine" light was on.

I finally had the chance to take the car in today. The problem? The "Check Engine" light was malfunctioning. And it didn't even cost me anything to find this out, since it was all covered by my warranty.

I'm so glad I don't drive Jean-Claude Grand Am anymore...
