...and an update.

Alisa and I went to the zoo for our 2-year anniversary. (Hey, we're poor, and couldn't afford nice things like fancy dinners or presents or anything.) It was fun - though rather hot and sunny, so most of the animals were having their siestas all afternoon. So that's that.

I read the sixth Harry Potter book in about six hours the night I got it. It was really good, though it seemed a lot like it was just a setup for book 7 - it didn't feel like a complete story in itself. Not to spoil anything, but the chapter where Voldemort cut off Harry's hand and said "I AM YOUR FATHER" was one of the most intense moments of the series in my humble opinion.

Yeah, I know. That's a pretty tired joke.

Anyway, it's about 100 degrees in Pasadena right now... cooler in the basin, but still warm enough that I have to have two fans on in my room all day and night so that neither I nor Simon (who's encumbered by all that warm fur) gets the vapors or dies of heatstroke. It sure feels nice when I get out surfing, though... the water's a cool 65 degrees or so, which cools me down enough that I find myself not caring that I've been out six times and still never managed to stand up.

I also want to take note of the sad passing of Jimmy Doohan, aka "Scotty." While I think in many ways it was fortunate that he passed so soon - he had Alzheimer's and his mind was deteriorating pretty rapidly from what I hear - it's still a great loss. Before he was an actor, Doohan was one of the Canadian soldiers that landed at Juno Beach, and suffered six bullet wounds - and the permanent loss of his right middle finger - for his efforts. As Scotty, he contributed a great deal both to our cultural lexicon and to the engineering world - and apparently was one of the nicest and most gracious guys out there. On a more personal note, as a recovering Trekhead and aspiring amateur engineer/builder, Scotty was an inspiration to me in many ways.

Work's almost over, and I'm going home to make myself dinner, so that's all for now.

Alisa got her headshots taken. I had to do a little work on it in photoshop (to touch it up), but here's my favorite:

(Here's a link to the actual folder. You should really tell her which one you think is best.)

A Brief Excerpt from my Inbox

This is a message I received on my "spamcatcher" address. Because I really don't have anything to say right now, I present it to you unedited and without comment.

From: Nathanial

"Yo everyone there! Criticism is an indirect form of self-boasting.,
It is not always granted to the sower to live to see the harvest. All work that is worth anything is done in... FAITH.,

What do you think, Subhuti, does it occur to the stream winner, `By me has the fruit of a stream winner been attained' ?,

It does not take much strength to do things, but it requires great strength to decide what to do.,

posterity will regard the merit rather than the person.
Don't lie if you don't have to.

YawoOurwayr Faith is that quality that enables us to believe what we know to be untrue.,

It is one of the most effective attitudes of the neurotic to measure thumbs down, so to speak, a real person by an ideal, since in doing so he can depreciate him as much as he wishes."
