Moving thoughts.....

I got to drive across the country again, moving Alisa over here to California. She's got a new place out here, and it's quite groovy... we took the grand tour of her whole apartment community yesterday, and it's got all the amenities. It's got a fitness club, meeting rooms for Alisa's merger negotiations and accounting scandals, its very own cement pond, and a big gate to keep all the poor folk out. I could never live there, what with my unique and scintillating combination of poverty and self-righteousness, but she'll have a groovy time.

But as we were crossing the nation in a 2003 Chevy Cavalier, we listened to the radio. And often, as we crossed those great plains known as the Great Plains, our "seek" button would alight on that unique phenomenon known as Christian Radio.

And as we were listening to the Christian Radio, I noticed something interesting... all the shows were dealing with the exact same topic. The topic was a matter of some national controversy, gay marriage. These radio speakers were going on and on about how gay marriage would end the Traditional Family(tm), force churches at gunpoint to say homosexuality is ok, and singlehandedly destroy everything Good and Right in this nation.

And I'm wondering... what the heck?

Because it seems to me that heterosexuals have done a pretty darn good job of crapping on the Institution of Traditional Marriage(tm) on their own, what with the massive divorce rates, the births out of wedlock, and other non-traditional family roles. Evangelical Christians are doing an even better job of crapping on Traditional Marriage(tm) than everyone else, what with their higher divorce and unfaithfulness rates than the country at large.

It also seems to me that what the Great Homosexual Conspiracy(tm) wants, is to be able to marry the person they want to marry, to be able to inherit their spouse's property or collect Social Security benefits if their spouse died, to be able to visit the person they love in the hospital, to have all those wonderful things the government already allows heterosexual married couples to do.

It also seems to me that it takes an especially cruel person to be happy or satisfied when someone isn't able to marry the person he or she loves.

Why is it that conservatives get so riled about gay marriage? Abortion I can understand; it's a life-and-death issue. To get up in arms about that makes sense. But gay marriage? Why should Jim Dobson care whether a man can marry another man? Since when was it his business? If I get married, will I have to run my choice of wife by him to make sure she's okay?

And how will this affect anyone? More appropriately, how will this affect anyone's legally-defined rights - the only way to justify a legal barrier to gay marriage? Answer me that, ye supporters of the Discrimination Amendment.
